Project Details:

Sukkot is a Jewish holiday where we build a temporary structure reminiscent of the huts (sukkhas) that were used by the Israelites after the exodus from Egypt. It is customary to invite guests into the sukkah to share the fruits of the harvest. Our intention is to open the sukkah at the Calgary Jewish Community Centre in SW Calgary to the general public so that everyone can experience and learn about this and other Jewish holidays. Talk on the Jewish faith will be offered every hour on the hour. The Sukkot Open House event will be free of charge, run by volunteers and will include light refreshments. The sukkah will be accessible from September 30th to October 9th and the organized talks will take place Sunday, September 30th and Thursday, October 4th. The $1,200 will contribute to the cost of the sukkah. The Calgary JCC will partner with Calgary Jewish Federation, which will assume the cost of refreshments. This is a great opportunity to introduce a Jewish holiday to the greater community, build bridges of friendship, increase understanding, and promote interfaith dialogue.

The Calgary JCC serves as the Jewish 'living room' of the Community, while offering social, educational, recreational and cultural programming within the framework of the Jewish tradition to individuals and families of all ages and backgrounds.

Calgary Jewish Federation is the coordinating and governing body representing the 8,000 Jewish people in Calgary.
