Sir and Madam are waiting to catch a train to the Land of Dreams. As time passes, they discover secrets about the other...but with nowhere to go and a train that never stops, how does one leave?
A clown play about aspirations, defeat and trying to catch the train to the Land of Dreams.
*Land of Dreams explores the contemporary controversial issues of border crossing and corporate America's influence on the financially challenged.
LAND OF DREAMS: Inspiration and Synopsis
Land of Dreams was born because clown duo, Alice Nelson and William da Silva, wanted to tell the story of those who cross the American border in search of a better life. After much research into the reality of this journey, they devised Land of Dreams; where a couple are lost in the desert and spend their days hoping to catch a train that will take them to their “land of dreams.” The show examined the nature of happiness and materialism’s influence on our dreams and desires. It also depicted the strength of community through characters who cannot live without each other and need each other for survival.
PRODUCTION HISTORY
Land of Dreams was a final thesis show at Dell’Arte in June 2011. Duo Alice Nelson and William da Silva devised a two-person clown show; which dipped into the realm of grotesque and bouffon. They produced all aspects of the show; characters, script, lighting, costume and set design, as well as working with a sound composer. They worked diligently for nine weeks, full-time on the project, which was had eight performances in the third and final year of our MFA degrees.
The director of the Dell’Arte Physical Theatre School and Master clown teacher, Ronlin Foreman, advised the show.
GRANT THEME
Land of Dreams falls under the theme of CALGARY NOW, as we are using diverse theatre styles (clown, bouffon and melodrama) to share our creative identity as Calgary theatre artists tackling contemporary social issues.
Our goal is to open a dialogue with our community on the social issues addressed in Land of Dreams. As America's neighbors, how do we resist the brainwashing of materialism as a means to happiness? We also aim to raise awareness regarding border crossing and begin a dialogue regarding safe options (employment) for those in poverty across the border.

I would not have been able to put up Land of Dreams had it not been for the GIG grant. The $1200 paid for the space and our wonderful tech, Olivia Brooks, and the time of my wonderful partner clown, Anton de Groot (who gave way time than I paid for, as he is a generous clown indeed). The project moved forward because I am surrounded by a generous community. Dennis, Artistic Director from Loose Moose, donated the space for rehearsing and items for our set (including a giant rug and a traveling trunk). Kelly Reay and Nan Balkwill both gave their time and expertise to come in and give us notes. And so many wonderful volunteers (Jenn Lynn Bain, Skye Perry, Dale Lee Kwong, Sherry Koehler, Judith Mendlesohn, Bee Nelson, Kelly Malcolm, Carmen Paterson and Carol Dan) worked our front of house. Thank the stars above for volunteers!
Our audiences were delighted by the show. Land of Dreams is a touching story, and remounting it reminded me why it's such a powerful story. It's not only a story about our desire to chase the American Dream, but it's a story of a couple who complete each other. Sir and Madam are best friends and would die without the other.
While discussing the show with the audience after, I found that they connected strongly with the characters and were moved by their journey. Some audience members voiced that they weren't sure if they should cry or laugh. I will take that as a great compliment to Anton and Myself.
Thank you to all who came out to support this new work.
