Project Details:

The Hillhurst Sunnyside Harvest Fair is a celebration of food and community. We mark the end of the growing season by bringing community together to honour our agricultural heritage, showcase urban agricultural successes, and show appreciation for our food producers and the work they do to bring us healthy, sustainable foods to the city of Calgary. We are fortunate to have partnered with the Calgary Horticultural Society and the community gardens of Hillhurst Sunnyside to make this year's Harvest Fair the best yet!

We invite folks of all ages to show off their green thumbs and culinary skills by entering into our celebrity-judged Harvest Fair contests - over 30 categories! From “most unusually shaped vegetable” to “best dill pickle”, we encourage anyone and everyone to participate. There are even special categories for the little ones, including “best vegetable sculpture” and “best drawing”.

The Harvest Fair, as part of our Farmers’ Market, features a wide array of local, mostly organic food vendors and artisans. We believe providing opportunities to bring people together and connect to good food are some of the best ways to build vibrant communities and support our local neighbourhoods. Local musicians also add to the festival atmosphere; we are grateful to have them and pleased to support them in this way.

The Grassroots Inspired Grant will help us to promote this event and hire local musicians to perform. Promotion that reaches beyond the Hillhurst Sunnyside communities will help make this event a city-wide celebration and further support our incredible food vendors by increasing traffic to their market. The Grassroots Inspired Grant will also help us cover the administrative costs of hosting the Harvest Fair and the cost of buying ribbons for our winners. It's fun to have thewinners walk away with a souvenir of their hard work over the season!

Hope to see you there!

The Hillhurst Sunnyside Harvest Fair was a huge success. Thanks to the Grassroots Inspired Grant we were able to promote the event across the city, and it certainly paid off: more than 200 entries and over 1500 people came out. With Kris Demeanor on stage and the absolutely incredible urban agricultural masterpieces, it was quite a show and the Hillhurst Sunnyside Community Association was packed!

Stay tuned for photos from the event!
