Calgary Artist Way Banner Project
Location: Douglasdale (Riverbend) (View Map)
Dates: July 1, 2012 - March 31, 2013
Website: http://www.dgca.ca
The Calgary Artist’s Way (CAW) aims to enhance the beauty, pride and culture of southeast Calgary, specifically in the communities of Douglasdale, Douglas Glen, Quarry Park and Riverbend. We will reproduce original artwork from local school-age children and professional artists on nylon banners and mount them on designated lamp posts approved by the City of Calgary. These banners will be displayed throughout the aforementioned communities. Visit web site www.dgca.ca and click on “Calgary Artists Way” to view samples of the banners. The artwork submitted by the three elementary schools will make up 30% of the total 91 banners to be installed. The banners from the students will be displayed adjacent to each school. For example, Douglasdale School will have 10 banners bordering their school. The distinct names of each community will be scripted at the bottom of each banner. In conjunction with this project, we will run an annual, outdoor arts festival showcasing local artistic talent and enabling featured artists to introduce the artwork presented on the banners. The festival programming will include an art exhibition, a special children’s table to create art, face painting, art demonstrations, free hotdogs and more. Music will resound throughout the park! Another goal of the CAW is to inspire passers-by, lift the spirits, instill pride, and raise awareness of southeast Calgary’s abundant visual artist community. A $1,200 grant will be used to seed additional banners and sustaining the banner project and arts festival over the coming year. Our banner project will be a wonderful experience for those passing through and living in our communities. It encourages neighbours to work toward the common goal of bettering the community through the visual arts. The distinct names of each community will be scripted at the bottom of each banner. This will be a true legacy project as the banners will be replaced annually with new artwork.

I am the founder of the Calgary Artists Way and am thrilled to be connecting to the larger artist community of Calgary. What a great City we live in that supports arts on the grassroots level. Calgary 2012 is a wonderful initiative showcasing Calgary as a cultural capital. We hope you will vote for our project that has brought together 17 artists, ranging in age from 7 to 70 to create 54 unique pieces of art in the streets of Riverbend, Quarry Park, Douglasdale and Douglasglen. Celebrate with us this Saturday the 16 fom 12-3 in Douglasdale for our first annual Arts Festival. See www.dgca.ca for more details.
