Battle City 2012 Calgary Breakdance Championship
Location: 200 Barclay Parade SW (Eau Claire Market) (View Map)
Dates: November 10, 2012
Website: http://facebook.com/BattleCityYYC
This is the first ever city-wide Calgary breaking championship series! Teams consisting of the best dancers from the Northeast, Northwest, Southeast, Southwest, and Deep South will battle each other with only one area emerging victorious as the best in Calgary!
Battle City was conceived to combat the difficulties our city faces with urban sprawl and to reach out to youth in all communities of Calgary. With the help of community recreational organizations, 2-on-2 YOUTH battles have already been held in each of the 5 areas of the city (NE, NW, SE, SW, and Deep South), which started September 23 and finished October 7. From these battles, the top YOUTH dancers from each area were selected by designated coaches (who are experienced dancers from the area) to form the official area team. Over the month of October, each of the teams will train together for an entire month with one sole purpose… To smoke all of the other areas at the finals November 10! The event will be free to attend and for all-ages!
Youth in all areas of the city are using breaking as a positive outlet for creativity. We are providing them with a chance to showcase their skills and passion to their communities. Through the coach and team concept, we are building meaningful mentoring relationships between younger and older dancers, which will elevate all of the dancers in Calgary. If we do receive a GIGYYC, we will be using the funds to cover expenses which include:
1. A custom trophy. This will be used to commemorate the winners of Battle City each year for years to come. We want to make this an annual event that youth and their communities look forward to each and every year!
2. Marketing. We need to spread the word to Calgarians far and wide so they can come out, take pride in their communities, and cheer on their area teams.
3. DJs & Sound Equipment. Music is the inspiration for dancers and great music provided by great DJs leads to exciting battles!
4. Judges. All of the top, most experienced dancers in Calgary are already pulling duty as coaches and battling at the finals so we will need to bring in guest judges from out of town. The judges will be Canadian and highly qualified, with each having had more than a decade of dance experience. In addition to judging, they will be sharing their knowledge with our dance community through workshops.

Urban sprawl makes it difficult for many Calgarians to access special events on a regular basis and to connect with each other so we created Battle City. With location being such a huge factor, our goal was to bring positive hip hop to the communities of Calgary through a series of free grassroots all-ages breaking (breakdance) battles (competitions), which we have accomplished. Now it's time to bring Calgarians from all communities together to cheer on their best dancers at the Battle City Finals!

Battle City was conceived to combat the difficulties our city faces with urban sprawl and to reach out to youth in all communities of Calgary. We've reached out to the communities of Calgary through a series of free grassroots all-ages breaking (breakdance) battles (competitions) in the NE, NW, SE, SW, and Deep South. The reception has been amazing and the youth in all of the communities have had a chance to test their skills and share their passion!
Now it's time to bring Calgarians from all communities together to cheer for their area dancers at the Battle City Finals! The best youth dancers from each competition have been selected to form area teams representing the NE, NW, SE, SW, and Deep South, and will train together for the entire month of October. On November 10, each of the area teams will battle each other to see who's on top for 2012.
We want to make this an annual event series that all the communities in Calgary look forward to. This is our first year and we need your help Calgary!
